NYC and Cars:

"The cars rushing below them knew nothing. People in cars weren't New Yorkers anyway, they'd suffered some basic misunderstanding. The two boys on the walkway, apparently standing still: they were moving faster than the cars."

-from "The Fortress of Solitude" by Jonathan Lethem

[Aside: Jonathan Lethem's website is kind of a trip. The visual on the first page is set on random, and if you click "glove compartment" you'll get to read some short pieces by him. He's also the author of Motherless Brooklyn (about a P.I.-type with Tourette's - it sounds outlandish but it works) and Gun, with Occasional Music (a Philip K. Dick-like novel, that is really enjoyable and really weird).
